About the
Artist
Shubhashish started his vocal
training in North Indian classical music with his father and uncle at
the early age of six. Later his formal training started with Pandit
Chinmoy Lahiri and subsequently with his son Sri Shyamal Lahiri.
He came to the United States
as a student, and in a few years made a name for himself. In the year of
1988 he became a disciple of India's greatest violin virtuoso,
Padmabhushan Pandit V.G. Jog. Now he continues his vocal training under
Pandit Ajoy Chakrabarty, scion and doyen of the Patiala Gharana (style
of music). He is carrying on the tradition of classical music in the
lineage of some distinguished musicians, including Late Padmabhushan
Pandit Gyan Prakash Ghosh, the most eminent musicologist of India today.
Shubhashish has given many
concerts in India. During the past several years, he has performed at
numerous musical programs all over the US, including Purdue University
(Indiana), Louisville (Kentucky), New Orleans, Baton Rouge (Louisiana), Cincinnati (Ohio), Chicago and many
other places. He was the featured singer at the prestigious 'Festival of
India' at the University of Pennsylvania and at the 'Sangeet Sammelan' in
Washington DC. In addition to performances, he has also given lecture
demonstrations at music departments in various universities.
During the past few years,
Shubhashish has sung with his teacher at several concerts in major US
cities. He is also a visiting lecturer at The Ali Akbar College of Music
in San Raphael, California. He was invited here by Padmabibhushan Ustad
Ali Akbar Khan, the maestro himself.
He is currently teaching in
the greater Washington area.
